Laparoscopy is an innovative way of performing a surgical procedure to reach parts of the body without the use of large cuts.Rightly called KEY HOLE SURGERY because instead of a large cut laparoscopy usually requires small cuts about 0.5-1cm. thin telescope is inserted and a small digital camera that is attached to the end of the scope shows the inside of the abdomen in a big screen or TV monitor. Abdomen is distended with gas to provide working space.Operation is performed through slender instruments

How is laparoscopy performed?

  • General anaesthetic is administered.
  • Your bladder is emptied with a catheter.
  • An instrument is introduced through your cervix into your womb so that it can be moved as required to help visualise the pelvic organs.
  • A small cut (0.5- 1cm) is made inside the umbilicus.
  • A needle is introduced via the cut into the abdominal cavity, which fills the abdomen with gas.
  • The telescope is inserted.
  • Up to 1-3 other small(0.5 cm) cuts may be made to introduce other necessary instruments into the abdominal cavity depending on the operation
  • Gas is removed at the end & the cuts may or maynot be closed with stitches.
